Arsenal captain's have enjoyed swapping North London for Catalonia in recent years, Thierry Henry, Cesc Fabregas and now Thomas Vermaelen looks set to join Barcelona on a reported £15 million move to the club.
Vermaelen has not been a regular at Arsenal in recent months - with Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker at the heart of defence. With that in mind Arsene Wenger has consistently said that he will not stand in the players way.
Manchester United were keen, but the two clubs could not agree on a deal, while Vermaelen also decided Barca was his preferred destination - and now it looks as though a move is on the brink of completion.
Mundo Deportivo, a Spanish paper with great links to Barcelona, are reporting that Vermaelen has passed a medical with the club. Their report says that club doctor Ricard Pruna and technical director Emili Sabadell were present at the Hospital d'Barcelona, after Vermaelen arrived in the city this morning, to carry out a very stringent medical - to test the injury prone Belgian to his very limits.
The fee is believed to be in the region of €19 million and official confirmation could come by this evening.
Arsene Wenger has confirmed his departure would lead to a centre-back being pursued in the transfer market.
Who should replace Vermaelen?
