Why Manchester United man can replace Xavi for Spain

Ander Herrera

Spanish playmaker has called it a day following a hugely successful international career.

Spain midfielder Xavi has ended speculation surrounding his future for his country, announcing his retirement from international football.

The Barcelona man made a total of 133 appearances, scoring 13 goals during his 14-year speall playing for Spain.

He went on to be part of the golden generation for the country between 2008-2012, winning two European Championships and a World Cup during that time.

He was an integral part of the side, with his slick movement and eye for the killer pass, but has finally called time on his international career.

Xavi failed to replicate the form seen so often from him at this summer’s World Cup in Brazil, where Spain crashed out of the group stages of the tournament. A 5-1 defeat to the Netherlands and a 2-0 loss to Chile sealed their fate in the early rounds, ending their global dominance.

Now the man that must step up and replace him in a Spanish jersey is none other than new Manchester United signing Ander Herrera.

Herrera has already shown a glimpse of what he is capable of during his first few games for United, and can be a major part of Spain’s plans going forward.

Of course, as ever in the Spanish squad, there will be stiff competition for places. The likes of Cesc Fabreags, Juan Mata and Andres Iniesta will be sticking around for a few years yet, while the likes of Koke also represent emerging talents within the squad.

But Herrera’s composure on the ball to pick a pass and create chances will see him unavoidable for selection should he replicate the form in the Premier League for United.

Can Ander Herrera become a permanent fixture in the Spanish squad?
