Arsenal and Barcelona 'not so different' - Vermaelen in first interview since £15m exit

Vermaelen Captain

Thomas Vermaelen has been speaking about his switch to Barcelona.

Arsenal agreed a deal to sell Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona yesterday, with a fee of £15 million reportedly changing hands for his services.

Vermaelen has recently lost his place in the Arsenal starting line-up with the partnership of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny keeping the club captain on the sidelines - and the Catalan club have moved to make him theirs, beating Manchester United to the punch.

Today he has been officially unveiled by the club and has given his first interview as a Barcelona player in the Nou Camp dressing room, and had this to say about the move:

"I feel very happy. I am very excited to play for this beautiful club, one of the best in the world. I mean it is a dream for a lot of people to play for this club.

"You play with the best players in the world and I am very honoured to play with them, play in this team, and it is also good for me as I can only become a better player training everyday with these players.

"I expect pressure like always, I mean I played for Arsenal as well and it is not so different to this club I think you need to win every single game. So I understand there will always be pressure to deliver a good performance I mean I will try to do that."

Indeed Arsenal and Barca are not so different, perhaps apart from their silverware haul in the past ten years. They play similar styles of football as has been proven by the amount of players that seem to go each way year after year.

Vermaelen will be hoping to be a hit in Barca - where he will wear the number 23 shirt.
