Paul Scholes: Manchester United lack in this department

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes says that for the Red Devils to win the Premier League title this season, they need to have their defenders injury-free.

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes recently made it clear that he likes to speak his mind even if his words do not go down well with some.

And the former England international midfielder has not shied away from giving his frank opinion on the Red Devils’ chances of winning the Premier League title this season.

‘Yes, I think so’, the 39-year-old told Sky Sports News when asked if United can challenge for the title. ‘If they can stay away from injuries because we do not have too many defenders I don’t think, if they can stay fit, they have a good chance'.

This United squad has been crying for defenders for quite a while now. Both Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic were let go, and no replacements for the veteran central defenders have been signed so far.

Although a talented and young Luke Shaw has been recruited – and that too for a whooping £27 million from Southampton – veteran left-back Patrice Evra has left, meaning that United are effectively looking for three replacements.

Of course, new manager Louis van Gaal is going to give youth-team members a chance in the first team as he did during his time at Barcelona and Bayern Munich, but he needs to sign at least one world-class and experienced centre-back in order to genuinely challenge for the title.

Germany international Mats Hummels has long been linked with a move to Old Trafford, while United were recently rebuffed in their approach for Thomas Vermaelen, who has left Arsenal for Barcelona (click here to read more).

For all talks of United having over £100m to spend this summer and the number of top-class players linked with moves to the Premier League giants, they have recruited just two major players so far: midfielder Ander Herrera and defender Shaw.

Time is slowly running out.

Can Manchester United win the Premier League with their current defenders?
