Crystal Palace legend names Watford duo as two best Championship strikers

Watford stars Troy Deeney and Matej Vydra have been named by Bolton manager Dougie Freedman as the best strikers in the Championship.

The attacking duo each netted in the Hornets convincing 3-0 victory over Freedman's Bolton side, showing signs of the form that terrorised Championship defences in Watford's run to the Play-Off final in 2013.

Despite failing to impress in pre-season, Deeney and Vydra - who topped the goalscoring charts in the last two seasons - turned on the style to secure an opening day home victory for the Hornets. Deeney clipped the ball over Andy Lonergan in the Bolton goal following a long-range pass from Gabriele Angella to open the scoring, before Vydra finished off a lovely solo effort six minutes later to end the match as a contest.

Although Fernando Forestieri also netted in the second half, scoring immediately following his arrival on the pitch, it was the starting strikers that Bolton manager Freedman named as the best in the division - claiming that the class of Deeney and Vydra was the difference in the game.

Quoted in the Watford Observer, the former Crystal Palace striker revealed after the game why his team lost.

The Scot said: “Very uncharacteristic lapses in concentration presented them with two opportunities and when you’re dealing with the best two strikers in the division you can’t do that, so that’s the real disappointment.”

Despite Bolton impressing in the second half, it was the goalscoring finesse of the Hornets strikers that changed the game - with Freedman's side unable to take any of the chances presented to them.

“In the second half I thought we came out and gave it a right good go. We created opportunities but we didn’t take them.

“That was the difference today in a game with two very top strikers. Surprisingly for me, they didn’t have to work too hard to get their opportunities and that’s what disappointing.”

Deeney was the Hornets top scorer last season, netting 24 times in the Championship, whilst Vydra recorded 20 league strikes in his first season in English football. Whilst Czech international Vydra has returned to Vicarage Road following a lost year in the Premier League, a host of top flight clubs are still intent on signing Deeney - with Leicester City, Aston Villa and Swansea said to be interested in his talents.
