Liverpool's captain, Steven Gerrard, has said he is already looking forward to his side's first game of the season against Southampton.

Steven Gerrard says that he is already looking forward to next week after his Liverpool side demolished Borussia Dortmund in a pre-season friendly yesterday.

The Reds ran out 4-0 winners over the German side at Anfield in a performance that has encouraged Liverpool fans that they will be able to compete for the title again this season.

The club lost Luis Suarez to Barcelona over the summer and, as such, doubts were cast over their top four aspirations, but this showing has evidenced that they are still a side with a lot of quality and Gerrard has already turned his attention to proving people wrong in the league.

In a post on Instagram, he commented: “Good performance from the lads today . Nice to be back at anfield and get a good win . Roll on next week”

Liverpool’s season starts with a game against Southampton on Saturday and it is a match with added meaning after the summer transfer dealings between the two sides.

The Reds have been particularly active this summer as they look to equip their squad for the demands of the Champions League and in doing so they have raided Southampton of many of their top players.

Dejan Lovren, who scored in the victory against Dortmund, Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert have all been snapped up by Brendan Rodgers’ men, leaving Southampton with plenty of cash, but a paucity of top-class players for the upcoming campaign.

It makes the fixture have a big-clash feel to it, and Southampton will be understandably desperate to beat the side who have bought many of their key players from last season to prove that they can cope without their big name stars.

Liverpool, meanwhile, will be looking to make a statement that they are set to stay in the top-four and fire a warning shot to their title-rivals that Suarez’s departure hasn’t had a detrimental effect on the side.

Can Liverpool make the top four again this season?
