Roma won't let defensive rock Mehdi Benatia leave lightly and reports suggest the Eternal City side are driving a hard bargain in talks with Chelsea.
Benatia's importance to Roma last season cannot be overstated and the Moroccan became a cult figure with Giallorossi supporters.
However, Benatia seems to have been unsettled by transfer rumours and seemed to have his heart set on a move to Manchester City earlier in the summer before it fizzled out.
While Roma continue to deny there's a chance Benatia will leave, media reports from Italy suggest that behind the scenes they are preparing for his exit.
"There's no problem for me - Benatia still has a four-year contract with Roma. I would say that is enough," Roma sporting director Walter Sabatini asserted.
Roma boss Rudi Garcia has been making attempts to convince Benatia to stay, but as yet no deadline has been put on his decision over where he would like to play next season.
Much will depend on whether Chelsea are willing to use some of the £50 million they received from Paris Saint Germain for David Luiz to fund the purchase of Benatia.
Roma have been linked to Aston Villa's Ron Vlaar and Kostas Manolas of Olympiacos as possible replacements, but they could face competition from within Serie A for both players.
