Chelsea shocked the world of football when they convinced former Arsenal hero Cesc Fabregas to join them this summer.
Inaction from the Gunners helped, but Fabregas jumped at the chance to link up with Jose Mourinho, when conventional wisdom would have suggested he would not.
Now as the transfer window enters it's final weeks, could Chelsea repeat the trick?
Spanish newspaper El Confidencial are one of many reporting that Real Madrid are prepared to sell Xabi Alonso at the right price, with the midfielder no longer considered an automatic starter by Carlo Ancelotti.
Alonso is a former Liverpool maestro, and last week was even linked back with a move to the Reds.
But as manager Brendan Rodgers looks to youth, and wanting to build a team very much of his own, there is a strong chance he would, like Wenger, decide to pass on the chance to sign a former fan favourite.
This, naturally, opens the door for Jose Mourinho to pull the trigger on a move to try to sign the 32-year-old, who he managed at Real Madrid for three seasons.
Alonso has been linked with a move to Chelsea before now, and was considered one of Mourinho's closest allies at Madrid as rumours of a dressing room split took hold.
Chelsea are thought to be in the market for another midfielder, prepared to sell John Obi Mikel if they can get a player of the right quality, which Alonso certainly still is.
For Liverpool fans, seeing Alonso wearing a shirt belonging to title competitors may seem unthinkable, but just ask Arsenal supporters about Fabregas. Or for good measure, Chelsea fans regarding Frank Lampard's Manchester City loan.
Fabregas's switch may even have helped clear the way, in Alonso's mind, should an offer come in - having seen a fellow Spanish international sign for a Premier League club which isn't his former side.
The way this unpredictable transfer window has panned out so far, the possibility certainly cannot be ruled out.
What do you think? Could Chelsea do a deal for Xabi Alonso? How would you react?
