Manchester City's Pablo Zabaleta says David Silva's new five-year deal is great news for the club, but wants no more complaining about the English weather from his teammate.

Manchester City full-back Pablo Zabaleta says he’s delighted to see teammate David Silva sign a new deal at the Etihad Stadium which will run until 2019.

The Spanish playmaker has proved one of the club’s star performers since arriving from Valencia in 2010 for £24 million, recording 27 goals and 61 assists in 183 games across all competitions, while winning two Premier League titles, the FA Cup in 2011 and League Cup last season.

Now set to spend a further five campaigns in Manchester, Zabaleta has labelled the 28-year-old a ‘world class player’, while also revealing the conversation the two had exchanged following the announcement.

‘We were talking today about the deal,’ he joked on Sky Sports News. ‘It was heavy rain Manchester and we were talking about English weather, and I told him “don’t complain about the weather now because you’ve just signed a new deal so it means you’re happy here.”

‘Of course, it’s fantastic for the team and for the club also, because we know how important David is for the team,’ he added.

‘He’s a world class player. He’s been fantastic in the last few years for us, so I think it’s great news for this club.’

Silva is the third City player to sign a new long-term contract this summer, following in the footsteps of Samir Nasri and Aleksandar Kolarov in committing his future to the club.

Gearing up for a season in which the team is looking to win a second consecutive league title, as well as compete for the Champions League, the 83-times capped international will again prove crucial to Manuel Pellegrini’s side and, if all goes to plan, could well be in contention for some high-profile individual accolades.

How crucial will Silva prove to Manchester City this season?
