While Stevan Jovetic has spoken openly of his desire to stay at Manchester City and help the club retain their Premier League crown, a potential late bid from Serie A title chasers AS Roma could severely test the Citizens' resolve.
The Montenegrin was one of the few shining lights for the Sky Blues during their 3-0 Community Shield defeat to Arsenal over the weekend, but has nevertheless been linked with a return to Italy.
According to a report from Gazetta dello Sport, AS Roma may be preparing to rekindle their interest in the 24-year-old as they look to mount a credible challenge to Juventus in the battle for the Scudetto this season.
The Rome club enjoyed a record-breaking winning run in Serie A last term but even that wasn’t enough to see them finish above the impressively consistent Bianconeri.
And despite boasting a wealth of attacking options already, it would appear that Roma are weighing up a bid for the forward, with Walter Sabatini thought to be a keen admirer of the Manchester City man’s talents.
Jovetic previously impressed in Serie A with Fiorentina, scoring 40 goals in 134 games, including 27 over his final two seasons at the club.
Injuries have so far hampered his progress at the Etihad but Jovetic has still managed to make an impact, with six goals in 16 appearances for the Sky Blues.
Manager Manuel Pellegrini is thought to be keen to maintain faith in the young forward but that could change if the club receives a substantial transfer bid from AS Roma.
When push comes to shove Jovetic may also favour a return to Italy and the league where he previously thrived.
Though Roma’s interest in the forward remains only that at this stage, this could be one rumour worth keeping a close eye on.
