Scientists develop a 'Tractor Beam' for Water.

Water Generator

Scientists in Australia manipulate objects in Water creating a 'Tractor Beam'.

Scientists from the Australian National University in Canberra, have successfully been able to manipulate objects floating in Water. Using simple wave generators the scientists have achieved the control of objects and are also able to move them against the wave.

To demonstrate the technique, the team created three dimensional waves set at different frequencies and sizes in order to manipulate the movement of a ping pong ball.

“We found that above a certain height, these complex three-dimensional waves generate flow patterns on the surface of the water,” said physicist Michael Shats.

The team boasted at a broad range of applications for the technique, including the clean up of oil spills, or helping swimmers who had found themselves being dragged by water currents.

Dr Horst Punzmann who led the project stated that there was no mathematical theory to explain the simple process but that anyone in a bathtub could essentially reproduce the technique.

Its great when science helps nature, what problem would you like science to solve?
