Benedikt Howedes addresses Arsenal transfer speculation

Germany at Euro 2012

Schalke 04 and Germany centre back Benedikt Howedes has commented on latest Arsenal transfer news.

Benedikt Howedes has emerged as one of three viable transfer targets for Arsenal as manager Arsene Wenger re-enters the summer market in order to purchase a utility player.

The Schalke 04 defender, along with Luiz Gustavo of Wolfsburg and Sporting Lisbon sensation William Carvalho have all been identified as strong candidates due to their ability to play a number of roles.

A shortlist of three may have been reduced to two yesterday, though, as Gustavo gave a clear indication of where his ambitions lie. He said: "I am back in training and I want to play on for Wolfsburg to help the team succeed. We are to be involved in three club competitions this season and we want to be among the best in all of them."

Today, Howedes has issued a similar statement indicating that he is more than happy where he is - in the Bundesliga.

The centre back, who played seven World Cup games as a left back en route to lifting the World Cup trophy with Germany, said to reporters: "There are always rumours, especially if you have become a world champion.

"But I played for at Schalke for 13 years and would not be here for so long if I did not love this club. Therefore, I am not currently working on such topics [personal discussions with Arsenal]."

Howedes's contract expires in 2017 and he refused to commit to Schalke forever as he reaffirmed his desire to "go sometime abroad and learn a new environment, language and [join] a different club."

If Howedes postpones that ambition to compete in a new country then, considering Gustavo's recent quotes, that only leaves Carvalho as an option.

Do you think it sounds like Howedes wants to stay at Schalke or to leave?
