Roma weigh up Chelsea’s Benatia bid, move looks likely

Roma are believed to be considering a bid of just under £30 million from Chelsea for defensive star Mehdi Benatia and will find it hard to resist.

Roma defender Mehdi Benatia is looking increasingly likely to join Chelsea before the transfer window slams shut.

The Moroccan international made a name for himself with his authoritative performances in Roma's defence last season and a queue of suitors formed at the start of the summer.

Manchester City looked to be the most likely destination, but a concrete offer never arrived because the Premier League champions opted to sign Eliaquim Mangala instead.

Benatia has remained unsettled by the speculation and has reportedly held Roma to ransom over a contract renewal in the hope of securing a Premier League switch.

Chelsea now seem to have handed Benatia that opportunity with the press widely agreeing that they have tabled a bid of around £30 million.

According to the Corriere dello Sport, Roma sporting director Walter Sabatini is set to arrive at the Giallorossi's training camp in Bad Waltersorf to tell coach Rudi Garcia that his prized defender is leaving and to discuss the deal with Benatia.

Roma have always insisted that they will fight to keep Benatia, but they don't have the finances to resist such a bid, especially if the player wants to leave.

The deal would represent some inspired business from Roma, who paid just £10.7 million for Benatia from Udinese this time last year.

Would Chelsea fans be excited to welcome Mehdi Benatia?
