Serie A transfer latest: Liverpool could engineer swap deal for World Cup star

Sebastian Coates

All the latest summer transfer news from Serie A...

A rumoured alternative for Manchester United in case they didn't get Arturo Vidal from Juventus was Inter Milan midfielder Fredy Guarin, but it has emerged today that Tottenham could pursue the Colombian. With new manager Mauricio Pochettino believed to be ready to let Sandro, Moussa Dembele and Etienne Capoue leave the club, midfield reinforcements will be needed - and 27-year-old Guarin has been linked.

Guarin could be pushed further forwards the exit door after Walter Mazzarri's side snapped up Cardiff City midfielder Gary Medel. The Chilean has long been rumoured to be heading to the San Siro, but it was finally confirmed today, with the former Sevilla man joining Yann M'Vila at Inter.

Elsewhere, Sampdoria have reportedly lined up Liverpool's Sebastian Coates as a replacement for Shkrodan Mustafi. The German international joined Valencia last week, and now Uruguayan Coates could head to Italy having been pushed down the pecking order at Anfield after the arrival of Dejan Lovren.

One player who could be moving in the other direction is goalkeeper Sergio Romero. The Argentine stopper enjoyed a great World Cup in Brazil this summer, and with his future lying away from Sampdoria after a year on loan at Monaco, a swap deal could be in the offing, with Reds boss Brendan Rodgers looking to add competition for Simon Mignolet.

Finally, Newcastle United's search for another striker has brought them to Palermo's Abel Hernandez. A €10m fee has been suggested for the 24-year-old hitman, despite the Magpies having already landed Emmanuel Riviere and Facundo Ferreyra this summer.
