Reported Newcastle target tipped for move to Portuguese giants Benfica

Newcastle Stand

After a great season in Ligue 1 with Lorient, reported Newcastle United target Vincent Aboubakar could be moving to Benfica this summer.

Vincent Aboubakar has enjoyed an excellent start to the Ligue 1 season. He won and dispatched a penalty on the opening day that saw Lorient beat Monaco 2-1. Now the reported Newcastle United target has been linked with a move to Portuguese giants Benfica for between €10 and €15million by various sources in the French media.

Last season, the Cameroonian striker scored 16 goals in Ligue 1 and was expected to make a move this summer if the price was right for President Loic Fery. German clubs Wolfsburg and Borussia Monchengladbach are also known to be keen on gaining his signature, but the Portuguese club are top of the list.

Aboubakar spent four years at French club Valenciennes, but he failed to live up to his early potential. He only managed to score 10 goals over four seasons. He then joined FC Lorient on a free transfer last summer, and the move worked to great effect.

The 16 goals he scored put him joint second in the Ligue 1 scorers chart, alongside the likes of Alexandre Lacazette and Wissam Ben Yedder. The former has been heavily linked with a move to Newcastle and it would make a lot of sense, and would be possible if Alan Pardew’s side were to target a move for the centre-forward.

Newcastle already have Emmanuel Riviere, Facundo Ferreyra and Papis Demba Cisse at the club, but the Magpies are looking for someone that can become a superstar and lead the club up the table.

Aboubakar has all the attributes to grow into a wonderful player. He is only 22, has now played at two World Cups and has finally blossomed in Ligue 1.

Perhaps he could benefit from another season in Ligue 1, but in this day and age it is hard to stop players making a big career move, when Europe’s big clubs come calling, it’s hard not to take that jump.

Benfica are a huge side, and it would let Aboubakar take the next step in his career. He only has to look at team-mate Jeremie Aliadiere to see both sides of the coin.

Aliadiere had a great season 18 months ago, he did not make the summer move when the interest was there and now he is surplus to requirements at Lorient.

In short, you could not blame Aboubakar for making the jump this summer.
