LvG linked again to Atletico winger, following Di Maria stumbling block

Arda Turan Atletico

With Angel Di Maria's price-tag proving a stumbling block, Manchester United are being linked again to Turkish midfielder Arda Turan.

According to The Mirror, Atletico Madrid midfielder Arda Turan has re-emerged as a transfer target for Manchester United after the Premier League side were put off a potential switch for Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria.

The Red Devils’ manager, Louis Van Gaal, is keen to bring in another wide player, but the Galacticos are frustrating the Dutchman in his pursuit of the Argentine international, who is rated by the his club at more than £50 million. Turan, who was on the Old Trafford outfit’s radar earlier in the summer, is likely to cost a more modest £15 million.

Van Gaal's interest in Di Maria has understandably waned following the realisation that the club would have been forced to pay over the odds to secure his services. Unfortunately, though, Turan is unable to offer the same threat as the 26-year-old.

The Turkish international played an integral role in his side’s Spanish league title success last season, making 30 appearances in total. He also featured in each and every European match for the La Liga side, scoring four goals before collecting a well-deserved runners-up medal.

In terms of goals scored, the pair are fairly well matched. However, it is Di Maria’s creative prowess that sets him aside from his domestic rival. Having fashioned 90 key passes to Turan’s 33, the Argentine holds the monopoly in attacking third.

Atletico have lost a number of key players this summer and manager Diego Simeone will be desperate to avoid any more departures, especially being so close to the start of the new season. Madrid, on the other hand, have a surplus of world class talent at their disposal. In essence, Di Maria’s exit seems a more likely occurrence.

The Red Devils have the funds available, and the Champions League winner is exactly the calibre of player that’s needed to restore the club’s former status. The reported £50 million is certainly worth paying.

Manchester United fans, Di Maria or Turan? Who would you rather see at Old Trafford?
