Liverpool make inquiry about Sergio Romero - reports

Anfield

Liverpool are in discussions to sign Sergio Romero as a replacement for Pepe Reina, according to reports.

Liverpool have reportedly made an inquiry about the availability of Sampdoria goalkeeper Sergio Romero.

The 27-year-old has been lined up by the Reds as a potential replacement for Pepe Reina, who completed a £2.5million move to Bayern Munich last week.

Romero shone at this year’s World Cup and has shot to prominence as a result after having a low reputation beforehand.

The custodian was considered one of Argentina’s weak-links before the tournament started, but he ended up being one of his nation’s top performers as they reached the final before losing to Germany.

It was a disappointing way for Romero’s time in Brazil to end, but a move to Anfield would surely make his summer better.

If he was to join Brendan Rodgers’ side he would come in as back-up for Simon Mignolet, who has established himself as the first choice goalkeeper after a stellar first-season between the sticks after moving from Sunderland last season.

Mignolet put in a series of fine performances as Liverpool reached the top four and made it back to the Champions League – where they hope to remain this season.

If Romero does join the task of being a goalkeeper in Liverpool training has got much easier this summer, following the departure of Luis Suarez.

The Uruguayan’s mega-money move to Barcelona has been a set-back in what has been a busy transfer window for the club so far.

The Reds have already brought in seven players from across Europe, including the likes of Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren and Lazar Markovic.

They are also expected to tie up a deal for Sevilla’s Javier Moreno in the near future, to bring their total incomings to eight.

If Romero was to join he would push their summer additions to close to double figures and add further depth to the Liverpool squad as they look to cope with the demands of elite-level European football once again.

Would Romero be a good buy for Liverpool?
