Manchester United to 'resurrect interest in £37m Arsenal target' - if they can't land Vidal

Sporting Lisbon

Manchester United are reportedly poised to rekindle their interest in Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho if they can't sign Arturo Vidal.

The start to life under Louis van Gaal couldn't have gone any better. Pre-season wins over LA Galaxy, Roma, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Liverpool and Valencia have spirits and subsequently expectations high ahead of the new season, but fans still want more new signings.

The Red Devils have already snapped up Southampton left back Luke Shaw and Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera, and whilst the latter should go some way to solving United's long-running midfield crisis, it's clear that van Gaal still wants at least one more new face given his pursuit of Juventus star Arturo Vidal.

The Chilean international is valued at around £40m by the Serie A giants, and speculation has been ongoing for weeks now over whether the former Bayer Leverkusen star will finally work under van Gaal at Old Trafford - after all, the Dutchman tried to sign Vidal from Leverkusen whilst he was in charge of Bayern Munich.

However, with Juventus adamant that the 27-year-old won't be sold, it's time for United to start thinking about alternative transfers - and that has reportedly led them back to William Carvalho, who was a top target for David Moyes in the January transfer window.

The Portuguese international, 22, impressed for Sporting Lisbon last season and subsequently booked his place in Paulo Bento's World Cup squad, where he continued to demonstrate his power, passing and positional awareness in front of the back four.

Yet given that United have been chasing Vidal for so long, it's allowed Arsenal to come in and lead the race for Carvalho's signature. A £24m bid from the Gunners has already been rejected, with Sporting believed to be holding out for close to Carvalho's £37m release clause.

Alongside Herrera, Carvalho could form an outstanding midfield partnership, but reports suggest that van Gaal will only chase his signature if Vidal doesn't arrive - meaning the saga could drag on for some time yet.

Would Carvalho be better at Arsenal or United?
