Mourinho has outdone Wenger this summer, says Carragher

The Liverpool legend has predicted that Arsenal will struggle to keep up with Chelsea this season - as the Blues have had a better transfer window.

Jamie Carragher believes that Arsenal will be left behind this season in the Premier League because they haven’t done enough during this transfer window.

Many Gunners supporters feel that Arsenal have the strongest squad they have had in years – after their summer spending – but Carragher clearly disagrees.

He feels that Arsene Wenger’s side have failed to improve their squad enough to keep up with Chelsea, who have solved all the problems which they had last season with their investment during this transfer window.

He said, in an interview with the Daily Mail: “I like [Jose] Mourinho’s style. He’s come in, had a year, and looked at it and said he needs a centre forward, a creative midfielder and a left back.

“So he gets Diego Costa, the top scorer in Spain. Bang, done. Then he gets Fabregas. Bang, done. There aren’t many better than him. And Filipe Luis, for me the best left back in the Champions League last season. Job done again.”

When talking about Arsenal, however, he is far less effusive with his praise.

“They had a good result against City in the Community Shield [a 3-0 win],” he says “but I look at the spine of the team and think: goalkeeper, good but not great, centre backs, good but not great. Arteta, holding midfield player and captain, good but not great. Same with the strikers. The spine comes up short. They spent more time at the top than any other team last season but still came up short.

“Why has Arsene Wenger not done what Mourinho has done? Why has he not bought a top goalkeeper? I wish Wenger would go out and buy a big goalkeeper, a strong centre back, a big midfielder and a decent striker and go for it.”

Wenger has bought in a goalkeeper this summer, but David Ospina is widely expected to go in as cover for Wojciech Szczesny.

The experienced Frenchman has also signed Calum Chambers off Southampton, but the headliner of his summer signings has undoubtedly been Alexis Sanchez.

The Chilean winger joined up from Barcelona during the transfer window to create quite a buzz around the Emirates that they could launch a title challenge again this season.

It has been some time since Arsenal have been genuine title contenders, but there is a feeling that they could go all this way this year amongst many supporters and pundits.

Carragher, however, clearly disagrees and is not won over by Arsenal’s summer spending.

He does have a point in the fact that Sanchez joins an attacking line-up filled with talent, but he is certainly a different option to what they already have.

Theo Walcott is the player with the closest style of play to the explosive South American, but his goalscoring record and final-ball is not in the same league as Sanchez’s and, as such, the 25-year-old is certainly an upgrade.

Carragher obviously feels he wasn’t a vital addition, but Wenger will be aiming to prove the former Liverpool man wrong and will be hoping that his attacking trio of Sanchez, Santi Cazorla and Mesut Ozil will do enough damage to Premier League defences to compensate for their apparent deficiencies elsewhere.
