The console giants have hit a new milestone with their latest 8th gen powerhouse.
The news of PS4’s flourishing user base was revealed during Sony’s Gamescom appearance this week. SCEE president and CEO Jim Ryan noted at the conference that the figure is based on units ‘sold through’ to consumers, as opposed to those bought in by retailers.
It was also mentioned that the PS4 has reached this monumental sales figure is less than nine months making the console (which initially launched in November 2013) one of the fastest selling in history.
By comparison the PlayStation 2, Sony’s last major console triumph, took just over a year to surpass 10 million units sold to retailers with PlayStation 3 reaching a similar landmark in roughly the same amount of time.
Sony will be bringing out a white PS4 to be bundled with the full release of Bungie’s promising new FPS Destiny with a standalone version expected to be available in Europe later this year.
