Spurs loan watch: Debuts for plenty, wins for few

Tottenham WHL

Three Tottenham youngsters featured in the first round of the League Cup this week, with several more making their debuts at the weekend as the Football League kicked off.

Several Spurs loanees made their first appearances at various clubs across England, with varying degrees of success in the lower divisions.

England Under-20 midfielder Alex Prtichard, who made his Spurs debut on the last day of the last season against Aston Villa, started in Brentford's 1-1 draw with Charlton in the Championship this weekend. He came close with a trademark long-range effort at the beginning of the match and impressed as he stayed on field up until the 79th minute. The man that came on for him, former Watford star Tommy Smith, scored a late equaliser for Mark Warburton's side in their first game since promotion.

Grant Hall started for Birmingham, with the 22-year-old, who was on loan at Swindon last season, playing the full match in a 2-0 loss up at Middlesborough.

In League One, young winger Kenny McEvoy came on as a second half substitute in Peterborough's narrow 1-0 win at Rochdale, it being the 19-year-old Irishman's professional debut. And in League Two, Shaquille Coulthirst started up front as Southend United travelled to Accrington Stanley, winning the first of two penalties for the visiting side. Though that penalty wasn't converted, the second one was giving the Shrimpers their own 1-0 victory.

Jordan Archer was an unused substitute in Northampton's win over Mansfield.

The midweek matches saw several youngsters turn out in League Cup ties. Hall helped Birmingham squeeze past League Two newboys Cambridge United 3-1, though they needed extra time two to do it.

McEvoy and Coulthirst weren't so lucky, as both their sides made early exits in the competition. McEvoy made his first start for Peterborough and played the whole match only for the Posh to lose 1-0 away to Portsmouth. Coulthirst's Southend lost at home to Walsall, the striker also taking in the full 90 minutes.
