'We're looking to win again' - Manchester United star on new season

Mata Chelsea Free Kick

Record signing Juan Mata is looking to bring success back to Old Trafford this season.

Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata is looking forward to a fresh start this season for him and his club after a nightmare 2013-14 campaign.

The Spaniard was signed by David Moyes in January for a club-record fee of £37million, but he struggled to make an impact in Manchester and could not inspire the Red Devils to a top-four finish.

In fact, United finished a disappointing seventh in the Premier League last season, but Mata is hoping for a turnaround under new manager Louis van Gaal.

"Last season was obviously very difficult for the club - but everyone was so nice to me, the players, the manager, the supporters," Mata told Sky Sports.

"I'm looking forward now to the start of the new season when I hope to kick-start with some winning form.

"I always try to improve and become a better player every season and this time around will be no different. I'll be looking to improve all aspects of my game and look to play at my best level, scoring and assisting as many goals as I can.

"As a team, we'll be looking to win again. It's part of the club's mentality to always be fighting for trophies.”

The appointment of van Gaal has certainly created more of a buzz around the club during a successful pre-season tour, during which Manchester United won the International Champions Cup.

The Dutchman's arrival should spell good news individually for Mata this season. Van Gaal's 3-5-2 formation will allow the Spaniard to take up his preferred number-10 role, as opposed to last season where he was often deployed on the right flank.

If van Gaal is able to get the best out of Mata, the 2014-15 season will be a far more enjoyable campaign for the player, the club and the Manchester United fans.
