£1.5m Liverpool departee 'looking forward' to new coach, who leaves six hours later

Selhurst Park - Crystal Palace - 23/02/2014

Martin Kelly was looking forward to working with Tony Pulis at Crystal Palace. But he should still be a hit with The Eagles.

Yesterday was a busy day at the office for Crystal Palace - with the major news story of course being the departure of Tony Pulis. The former Stoke boss guided Crystal Palace to their best ever Premier LEague finish last season, winning the Manager of the Year award as a result.

But after a debate over control over transfers at the club Pulis has left the club, leaving Steve Parish, Iain Moody and Keith Millen with the job of picking up the scraps.

And one former Liverpool player potentially miffed.

It is easy to forget that Martin Kelly is an England international. Since the former Liverpool prospect made his bow for his country in May 2012 he has played very little football after a string of serious injuries. In the past two seasons he has made just nine appearances in the Premier League.

With Liverpool signing Javier Manquillo and Alberto Moreno seemingly on the way, not to mention the emergence of Jon Flanagan, Kelly has seen his first team opportunities dwindle - so was keen to make the £1.5 million switch to Selhurst Park yesterday afternoon.

And he said this after completing his move:

"I'm looking forward to playing under Tony and playing regular football again."

Then, approximately six hours later, Pulis left the club. Not exactly the start he would have had in mind.

However the defender should not fear too much. Pulis may have left over transfers but the irony is this great deal being pulled off so close to his departure. At that price Kelly is an absolute steal and whether at full-back or centre-back the former Liverpool star will, if he stays fit, make the Palace fans glad all over this campaign.

Will Kelly be a hit at Palace?
