Bolton and USA star backs Yedlin for Tottenham success

Bolton Wanderers midfielder Stuart Holden believes DeAndre Yedlin has what it takes to succeed at Tottenham Hotspur but warns that the Premier League can be a ruthless environment.

Bolton Wanderers midfielder and USA international Stuart Holden believes compatriot DeAndre Yedlin has all the tools to succeed at Tottenham Hotspur and hopes he gets the chance to show his worth.

With the wider world first becoming aware of the Seattle Sounders right-back at the World Cup, Yedlin’s impressive substitute outings in Brazil saw him linked to a host of top European sides this summer, with Liverpool, Roma, Inter Milan, and Napoli all reported to be courting his signature before a $4 million move to Tottenham was completed this week.

Signing a four-year contract at White Hart Lane, the promising 21-year-old is set to remain with the Sounders through the 2014 season, before the two sides decide whether he will make the switch to England in the winter or prior to the 2015-16 campaign.

Having made the move from MLS to the Premier League himself in 2009, Holden believes Yedlin can be a success at Spurs, but the ex-Houston Dynamo man also warns that playing time will be far from guaranteed.

‘I really do [think he has what it takes],’ he told ESPN. ‘Obviously the manager believes in him, paying a rumoured $4 million, so I really hope he gets his opportunity.

‘Sometimes it’s tough as a young player to go into such a big club and get your chance right away and, if you don’t, you’re out the door and someone else is coming in.

‘I really hope for DeAndre’s sake that he gets that chance because I fully believe that he has the talent and all the tools to go on to be a great player at this level, and to become a focal point at right-back for the US for years to come.’

One of the top-rated talents in MLS, Yedlin’s career has seen a meteoric rise over the past 18 months, going from the college level to a two-time All-Star and World Cup standout after just one full professional season, but the exciting speedster will have to wait before he can test himself in the English top-flight.

Will Yedlin prove a hit at Tottenham?
