Having found a home at Wolfsburg this summer, Nicklas Bendtner has revealed that he wanted to leave Arsenal prior to last season before seeing his request denied.

Having completed his move to Wolfsburg, Nicklas Bendtner has revealed that he wanted to leave Arsenal prior to last season.

Bendtner had been available on a free transfer since his Arsenal contract expired at the end of 2013-14 campaign, with Wolfsburg opting to sign the Danish striker after failing in their attempts to land Romelu Lukaku, Fernando Torres and Alvaro Morata.

His drawn-out search for a new club this summer had also seen the likes of Aston Villa and Eintracht Frankfurt linked to his signature, and the 58-times capped international has admitted that he would have liked to have had such options available to him 12 months ago.

‘When I was with Juventus I got an injury, which was very unfortunate, and last season just didn’t go as I planned,’ he told reporters at his official unveiling.

‘I was hoping I was going to play somewhere else but circumstances dictated that I had to stay at Arsenal and that wasn’t my decision.’

A divisive figure among football fans, Bendtner scored just twice in 12 games for Arsenal last season, spending the prior two campaigns on loan at Sunderland and Juventus after falling out of favour with Arsene Wenger during the 2010-11 campaign.

Once considered the club’s most exciting prospect, he had been a regular fixture in the first-team from 2007 to 2010 but failed to live up to the high expectations, netting 47 times in 171 total appearances during his time at the Emirates, with various off-field antics overshadowing his accomplishments.

Still just 26, the polarising front man will be hoping that a move to the Bundesliga is what’s required to get his once-promising career back on track and silence doubters back in England.

Can Bendtner get his career back on track at Wolfsburg?
