Chelsea expecting bids for goalkeeper - Has Mourinho picked his No.1?

Petr Cech

Chelsea are reportedly expecting bids from some of the continent’s elite for goalkeeper Petr Cech.

Blues boss Jose Mourinho had stated earlier this summer that both current No.1 Petr Cech and loan star Thibaut Courtois would compete for the place this season, and decision on who has the edge will be revealed when Chelsea open the season at Burnley on Monday.

The 22-year-old has been the subject of intense speculation over his future but the youngster may soon be the new Chelsea No.1 following reports that the Blues are preparing to listen to offers from European champions Real Madrid, and Ligue 1 duo Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco for Petr Cech.

The 32-year-old stopper has been Chelsea No.1 since he arrived in 2004 as one of Jose Mourinho’s first signings through the door in his first spell at Stamford Bridge a decade ago but could be on his way out this summer.

Cech has made 326 appearances for Chelsea and helped the Blues win 13 trophies in ten years, including three Premier League titles and the Champions League, as well as earning over 100 caps for the Czech Republic national team.

However, the emergence of Courtois as one of the most exciting goalkeeping prospects of his generation may have cut short his Chelsea career – a stopper in his early 30s is ordinarily considered to be in the prime of his career. The young Belgian’s exceptional talent and form in the Spanish capital and away in Brazil at the World Cup may have forced Mourinho to hasten his decision over the future No.1.

The Portuguese coach has insisted he will not reveal who will start in goal against Burnley this Monday until the day of the game with rumours persisting that Courtois could be handed his competitive debut for Chelsea this weekend.

Cech surely won’t be short of options if the Blues do decide to move him on in favour of allowing Courtois to further his development and a move to Spain or France to join some of the continent’s most prestigious clubs would likely be preferable to warming the bench at Stamford Bridge. If these reports are accurate, it would appear that Mourinho may have already picked his No.1 at Chelsea.
