The opening weekend is always a tricky one to predict as there is very limited form to work with, and it is always difficult to predict starting lineups accurately.
Champions Manchester City face a tough away trip to Newcastle on Sunday in a game that is tough to call, so it is best to focus on the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United for the opening weekend.
The Gunners then entertain Crystal Palace on Saturday night and should get off to a much better start than last year, especially with Tony Pulis's departure from the Eagles.
Liverpool are also at home, as they host what will be a new-look Southampton while Chelsea travel to promoted club Burnley in the final game of the weekend.
Here are five players you should consider this weekend:
DEF - Steven Caulker - QPR
Caulker is set to make his competitive debut for the R's against Hull this weekend and he is an enticing option at 5.0. He could pick up a valuable clean sheet for QPR and is always a threat from set-pieces at the other end of the pitch. The former Cardiff man is a cheap enough option to allow you to invest further up the field and could be a valuable pick for the opening weekend.
DEF - Mathieu Debuchy - Arsenal
Another new signing to consider is right-back Debuchy, who is set to start for the Gunners on Saturday against Crystal Palace. He is likely to score points for a clean sheet and is always a threat down the right flank. Alexis Sanchez will probably start in front of Debuchy and the French full-back could score a decent amount of points in his first league start for Arsenal.
MID - Juan Mata - Manchester United
The Spanish playmaker will likely start behind two United strikers in Van Gaal's opening game at Old Trafford and Mata could be the man to shine in Saturday's opener. He is always a threat in and around the box and is more than likely to pick up and assist as he will be fielded in his preferred central position. Mata starts the season at 9.0 but that price will probably rise as the season progresses so it is best to get him while you can.
MID - Aaron Ramsey - Arsenal
Another Arsenal man to seriously consider is last year's revelation Aaron Ramsey. The Welsh midfielder will start in the middle of the park for the Gunners and he proved he is raring to go with another impressive performance against Manchester City in the Community Shield victory last weekend. Ramsey is a constant goal threat and will go out to enjoy himself against the Eagles in the opening game on Saturday night.
FOR - Wayne Rooney - Manchester United
Rooney is the most selected player in the Premier League's official game with almost 50% of managers picking the United captain. Rooney will be played as a striker once again and with Robin Van Persie set to miss the opening game, the Englishman will have the chance to shine up front for Van Gaal's side. The pairing of Mata and Rooney should rack up points for goals and assists and despite coming in at 10.5 Rooney is the must-have for the opening weekend.
