Liverpool and Arsenal reportedly rule out move for James Milner

Etihad Stadium

Liverpool and Arsenal have reportedly balked at Manchester City midfielder James Milner's wage-demands after trying to sign him previously this summer.

Liverpool and Arsenal were both put off making a move for James Milner because of his wage demands, according to a report.

Milner was thought to be on the verge of leaving Manchester City at the start of the summer, but the longer the window has gone on the more likely it looks that he is set to stay.

The England international had reportedly grown frustrated at his lack of first-team football at the Etihad and had wanted to move on during this transfer window, with a host of top Premier League clubs linked with making a move.

However, Daniel Taylor of the Guardian suggests that any prospective deal fell through due to his high-wage demands.

Milner is thought to earn around £80,000-a-week at City and neither Arsenal nor Liverpool were prepared to stretch their wage budget so much to allow his arrival.

The 28-year-old will now be kept at the Premier League champions and the club expect to receive few problems from a player who is famed for his professionalism.

Milner is one of the most hard-working members of Manuel Pellegrini’s squad at City and would be a valuable starting member of most English clubs' squads.

However, City arguably possess the most talent of any side in England’s top-flight and Milner’s lack of guile has cost him a chance of regular starting berth.

In central midfield he is forced to compete with Fernandinho and Yaya Toure for a place, whilst Jesus Navas occupies the right-wing spot.

The arrival of Fernando, a £12million singing from Porto, this summer has meant that Milner’s first-team opportunities this year look even more limited, but he appears set to stay now.

City were known to be reluctant to sell Milner as he is an English player and he helped them fill the quota required to meet UEFA’s demands in the Champions League.

City get their season underway on Sunday when they take on Newcastle United at St. James’ Park as they look to get their title defence off to a successful start.
