North-East latest: Newcastle defender wants to stay; Chelsea duo set for 'Boro

Middlesbrough Fans

We bring you the latest news from Newcastle United, Sunderland and Middlesbrough.

1) Davide Santon not going anywhere

Newcastle United defender Davide Santon says that he is happy on Tyneside and is not looking to move this summer.

The Italian has been linked with a move away from the club, most recently to Fiorentina, but says that he is not interested in a switch back to his homeland.

“I am very well at Newcastle, I found my space and other than that I have my whole family with me,” he said.

“I have two more years of my contract and for the moment I don’t intend to change.

“Actually, I have a wish: if I ever encounter any offers from other leagues, I would still hope to stay in the Premier League.”

2) Siem De Jong hoping to continue City record

Siem De Jong says that he hopes he will be able to shake off an injury to play in Newcastle United’s opening Premier League match against Manchester City – where he will be hoping to continue his scoring record against them.

De Jong has scored three goals in his last two games against the English side, when playing for Ajax, and is aiming to keep his success against them up by scoring on his competitive debut for his new club.

“I played two times against City in the Champions League,” De Jong said.

“I got three goals in two games and we won the first one and then drew against them in Manchester.

“For us, we left them in fourth place in the group, and it was a really hard group, so for us it was a great time.

“Hopefully I can get some goals against City again on my debut.”

De Jong is currently suffering with a calf injury, and is a doubt to play on Sunday, despite his positive intentions.

3) Johnson doesn’t know who Sunderland number one is

Adam Johnson admits that the Sunderland squad do not know who will be playing in goal for the side this summer.

Vito Mannone excelled for the Black Cats last season, scooping their player of the season award, but he has been joined by Costel Pantilimon this summer as they two fight it out for one space.

And Johnson says that Gus Poyet’s task of picking between the two stoppers is an unenviable one.

We were just talking about it the other day and we don’t know what the gaffer will do,” he said. “It’s difficult isn’t it?

“It’s so hard to call.

“It’s competition for Vito, who was excellent last season. It’s going to be a good battle between themselves.

“Costel played a few times at City last season and Vito has been at Arsenal, so they’re two players who’ve been at big clubs.

“They will want to both be number one.”

4) Poyet wants England return for Rodwell

Gus Poyet hopes that Jack Rodwell’s move to Sunderland will put him back in contention to play for England again.

The central midfielder, signed from Manchester City for £10 million, has found first-team chances limited since his move to the Etihad and has not been capped by the Three Lions since June 2013.

However, Poyet hopes the key role he will play after joining Sunderland will push him back into Roy Hodgson’s thinking and allow him to perform at international level again.

He said: “We had an option to buy Jack because he’s been at Man City a couple of years without playing.

“He needs to play because we want him to be in the national team very soon.

“And for that, he needs to perform.”

5) Lewis Baker to join Patrick Bamford at Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough are hoping to tie up a loan deal for Lewis Baker, with Patrick Bamford’s switch almost complete.

The Chelsea duo are both on the Championship club’s radar and could make a move in the near future, according to reports.

Both are highly regarded at Chelsea, with Jose Mourinho even identifying Baker as a future England international and they will unquestionably make good additions at the Riverside.

Are you excited by the signing of Bamford? Can Rodwell play for England again?
