Are Arsenal targeting the wrong Liverpool defender to replace Vermaelen?

Sebastian Coates

Should Arsenal look at Sebastian Coates before moving in on Daniel Agger?

Arsenal are after a new centre back this summer after agreeing to sell Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona for a fee in the region of £15 million. The club captain had become disillusioned with his lack of playing time at the club - so decided to find a new path this summer.

Many a name has been linked to a potential Arsenal switch since the sale of the Belgian - the likes of Kostas Manolas and Benedikt Howedes to name a few. One other name doing the rounds is Liverpool centre-back Daniel Agger.

The Dane has seen his first-team opportunities dwindle recently, with the arrival of Dejan Lovren from Southampton sounding the death knell for his Anfield career. With that in mind Arsenal are said ready to swoop in for the 29-year-old.

However, are they chasing the wrong Liverpool defender?

Agger turns 30 this season and his best years appear to be behind him. He is certainly not washed up, far from it, but to spend big on him would seem an unwise business decision.

Instead they should give a chance to a player seemingly forgotten by Brendan Rodgers and many a Liverpool fan - Sebastian Coates.

He missed most of last season injured but was still in the Uruguay squad for the World Cup - such is the high regard he is held in his homeland.

At just 23-years-old he still has plenty of time to grow as a footballer and Liverpool fans have been impressed with his performances this pre-season. He is fighting fit and undoubtedly talented - but first-team opportunities are few and far between for him at Liverpool, so he would possibly be available.

He would represent a cheaper, younger and hungrier option when compared to Agger and with that in mind he would surely be a better option altogether.

Should Arsenal make a move for Coates?
