So this is it. We may have had a World Cup this summer but that did not alleviate this writer’s craving for the joy (and despair) of the Premier League. But it is now back and arguably better than ever, with many clubs strengthening and the title-race tipped to be even closer than last season’s exciting last few months.
Manchester United and Swansea City kick off the action at Old Trafford, with all eyes on Louis van Gaal and what he will do at a club desperate to put last season's woes behind them.
Pre-season has hinted at much better things to come. But the top flight is a far tougher proposition, and it will be interesting to see how United cope, given that their squad is, at least for now, still short of many of those around them.
Swansea will know they could be in for a tough afternoon, with Old Trafford unlikely to be as welcoming as it was on too many occasions last season. But they will take heart – and inspiration – from last season’s FA Cup victory.
