Former Liverpool hero signs new contract ... with €100m release clause

Javier Mascherano Argentina

Barcelona star Javier Mascherano has signed a bumper new deal with the La Liga side.

Lionel Messi may have received the Golden Boot award at this summer's World Cup but most people would concede that the star player for Argentina was in fact Javier Mascherano. The former Liverpool man was back in his favoured defensive midfield role for the Albiceleste - after playing most of his club football at centre-back in recent years.

Mascherano became known as one of the best players in the world in the deep midfield role whilst at Liverpool but he was turned into a centre-back at Barca through necessity. The club have now bought Jeremy Mathieu and Thomas Vermaelen as new boss Luis Enrique reportedly sees him playing higher up the pitch this campaign.

And to signify their belief in the bullish maestro they have handed him an impressive looking new contract at the Nou Camp.

Despite being 30-years-old Barca obviously have faith in the player, as they have given him a deal until 2018 - when he will be 34 and approaching the end of his professional career.

Not only have they given him more years at the club they have also slapped down an incredible buy-out clause on his head - of €100 million.

That is a sensational amount that, of course, nobody will ever pay - but it just shows how important the man who cost Liverpool £18.6 million in 2007 is to the Catalan giants that they would offer him such a deal at this stage of his career.

Is Mascherano the best holding mid in the world?
