Arsenal forward Lukas Podolski has paid tribute to his club teammate and German compatriot Per Mertesacker in his own unique way.
Former Bayern Munich star Podolski is a flamboyant character, has a zest for life and is quite active on social media.
And the 29-year-old has used some of his well-intended humour to send a heart-warming message to the 6’6” Mertesacker, who announced his decision to retire from international football on Friday (click here to read more).
Podolski and Mertesacker both made their debuts back in 2004 and have been playing together at Arsenal since 2012. And both were part of Germany’s 2014 World Cup-winning 23-man squad in Brazil earlier this summer.
However, it does not seem that Podolski has any immediate plans to follow his German compatriots Mertesacker, Philipp Lahm and Miroslav Klose and call time on his international career.
The former Koln star has scored 47 goals in 116 matches for his country, and although he is largely a squad player, Arsenal forward Podolski still has a few more years to give to his country.
Should Lukas Podolski follow Per Mertesacker and retire from international duty?
