PHOTOS: Rooney scores first United goal of van Gaal era

Wayne Rooney scored a fine overhead kick to net the first competitive goal of Louis van Gaal's Manchester United reign.

Things did not go according to plan in Louis van Gaal's first competitive match in charge of Manchester United.

By the end of their 2-1 defeat to Swansea City on Saturday the home side had reverted to long-balls and inaccurate crosses, as Marouane Fellaini acted as a make-shift striker and Wayne Rooney glared at his misfiring teammates.

It all looked so different when United took to the field in a wave of euphoria, and despite going a goal down to the visitors, Rooney's close-range overhead kick gave the Old Trafford faithful hope that things were about to get a whole lot better.

Alas, it was not to be, and van Gaal's side lost 2-1, the sole excitement coming from Rooney's moment of brilliance.

There will be plenty more goals for the England striker, and plenty of wins under the 62-year-old Dutchman. But there is also plenty of work to be done, and this match showed that in all its unforgiving detail.

Two new centre-backs are required and a quality box-to-box midfielder is a necessity.  But then everyone has been saying that for for quite a while now; the time has come for the club to act.

What did you think of Rooney's performance against Swansea?
