Spurs legend labels Van Gaal’s opening 45 mins 'shocking'

Louis van Gaal

Manchester United struggled in their first game of the season, losing 2-1 at home to Swansea City.

Manchester United's home loss to Swansea in Louis van Gaal's first competitive game as the club's manager continued their poor home form from last season. And it left several established football names commenting on the English giants.

Ki Sung-yueng scored a shock opener for a determined and well organised Swansea side to put the Welsh outfit ahead coming into halftime. Gone was United's impressive attacking football of preseason, where they beat Liverpool, Roma and Real Madrid.

Instead was the same uncertain, toothless play that was a feature of the side that struggled so much last year. Despite Wayne Rooney's equaliser early in the second half, Swansea took the lead again through new Spurs recruit Gylif Sigurdsson, and the Reds were unable to come close to a second goal.

Tottenham legend Darren Anderton was unimpressed by United's performance, and took to Twitter to criticise the team.

He didn't have much to say on the game, but at half time the 42-year-old certainly didn't mince his worlds, seemingly fiercely critical of the home side's opening 45 minutes.

The ex England winger famously came close to joining Manchester United at the height of his Spurs days, before eventually remaining at White Hart Lane.

Anderton ended up in North London for 12 years, though his time at the club was characterised by his ongoing injury problems that saw him labelled 'Sicknote' by fans throughout the country.

United fans will likely be urging caution in the inevitable rush to criticise Louis van Gaal and his players, but it does serve as a stark reminder that the problems of last season are unlikely to be solved with a flick of the Dutchman's wrist.
