'Gutted' Ross Barkley's message to Everton team-mates

Ross Barkley

The 20-year-old will miss his side's Premier League opener with a leg injury.

Ross Barkley says he is 'gutted' to miss Everton's first game of the season against Leicester City.

The 20-year-old injured his leg in training on Friday and left the club's training ground wearing a brace.

Reports suggest he could be out for 6-8 weeks - and Barkley has expressed his disappointment at missing the Toffees' Premier League opener.

However, he has wished his team-mates all the best, hoping Roberto Martinez's men can claim the three points.

Barkley is likely to prove a big miss for Everton should he be forced out of the first two months of their campaign.

The 20-year-old scored six times last term, in what was a breakthrough campaign for the attacking midfielder, who also made it into Roy Hodgson's World Cup squad.

As Opta stats show, Barkley was one of the Premier League's most exciting talents, winning 80 dribbles, the fourth-highest total of any player in the top flight.

Toffees fans will no doubt hope his injury does not prove too serious.
