Villarreal boss hopeful of retaining Tottenham’s top transfer target

Villarreal are confident of holding on to Tottenham Hotspur target Mateo Musacchio.

As the Premier League season approaches its opening weekend, Tottenham Hotspur are still light in numbers and their hopes of landing number one target Mateo Musacchio are fading.

The Villarreal defender has been heavily linked with a move to Spurs in recent weeks as new boss Mauricio Pochettino aims to bulk up his defence.

Leaking goals, especially against the Premier League’s leading clubs, was a big concern for the North London outfit last season, and it is an area which is crying out for improvement.

Argentine international Musacchio has all the attributes required to become a hit with the White Hart Lane supporters and his possible arrival could be key to Pochettino’s success at the club.

La Liga outfit Villarreal, however, are said to value the 23-year-old as indispensable to their long-term plans and with the transfer deadline in sight, boss Marcelo Garcia Toral told reporters that he is now more confident of keeping hold of his prize asset.

“I see him staying now and for all of this to end, although I can’t say for sure," he is quoted as saying by the Spanish newspaper AS.

The paper also reports that the Villarreal board of directors are in positive move ahead of the new season as they assured fans that no more changes are necessary – further suggesting that Musacchio’s proposed deal to Spurs is off.

"A last minute exit would be very complicated to solve, therefore despite interest, it's difficult to see Villarreal allowing this possibility," states the report.

The central defender moved to Spain in the summer of 2009 and has gone on to make 139 league appearances for the Yellow Submarine.

Despite an excellent campaign last season, he missed out on Argentina’s 23-man World Cup squad and the chance to showcase his talent on the biggest stage of all.
