£12m Liverpool signing Moreno reveals his tragic footballing hero

Alberto Moreno Perez

Alberto Moreno says the late Antonio Puerta was a big influence on him growing up at Sevilla.

Liverpool finally announced the signing of Spanish defender Alberto Moreno yesterday. The young left-back arrived from Sevilla in a deal believed to be worth around the £12 million mark.

Moreno arrives off the back of a breakthrough campaign with Sevilla in 2013-14. He helped them win the UEFA Europa League with a penalty shoot-out victory against Benfica last season and also made his way into the Spanish national team.

Left-back is an area in which Liverpool have recently had problems. The injury record of Jose Enrique and poor form of loanee Aly Cissokho often saw right-footers Jon Flanagan and Glen Johnson asked to a job on the other side of the pitch.

Moreno is certainly what you would call an attacking left-back. He loves getting forward and has the pace to do so. His crossing is getting better with age and there is a real chance he could rival the Stanley Park rivals Everton's left-back Leighton Baines as an attacking full-back as time goes by.

And there is a good reason for his attacking verve, his inspiration was also an attack minded full-back. Unfortunately we use past tense, because it is a player who tragically lost his life at the tender age of 22.

Speaking to the official Liverpool website after completing his move, this is what he said when asked about his influences:

"I think I can add my willingness to play, my aggression, hard work and being part of the team - always sticking together. I don't really like to describe myself; however, I think my main qualities are speed, precision when striking the ball and overall presence on the pitch. Antonio Puerta was a great influence for me when I was at the academy at Sevilla, but nowadays I look up to Jordi Alba and Marcelo."

The tragedy of Puerta is well known. He was just forging an impressive career at Sevilla, with the likes of Moreno in the academy below looking up to him as a role model.

Then, on the 25th August 2007, he collapsed during the opening day of the La Liga season against Getafe. He walked off the pitch but lost consciousness again in the dressing room. He was rushed to hospital where, three days later, he died of complications arising from several cardiac arrests, caused by a previously undiagnosed hereditary condition.

But Moreno was inspired by the late Sevilla star and now aged 22, the age when his hero tragically lost his life, he has the chance to play for one of the biggest club's in the world.

Where he will surely do Puerta proud.

Can Moreno make Puerta proud at Anfield?
