Renowned football presenter blames Ferguson for situation at United

Manchester United 3

Richard Keys piled the blame on Sir Alex Ferguson for Manchester United's weak squad.

The TalkSport presenter has relinquished both David Moyes and Louis van Gaal of any blame regarding the current Manchester United squad by claiming that legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson is to blame instead.

Keys did not go into much detail about his opinion, but rather offered up the debate as to whose fault it was that the squad is so frail.

It is not just a view that is held by Keys; many in the game believe Ferguson left the squad relatively weak, particularly in the midfield which had been lacking in many of the Scot's years, too.

But it is difficult to place all the blame on Ferguson's shoulders. He left the club in 2013 as Premier League champions, and yes the squad needed some significant investment in key areas like defence and midfield.

However, David Moyes had more than enough time to bring in new recruits to strengthen the squad, but instead splashed £27million on Fellaini and £37million on Juan Mata, and neither have got close to living up to their price tag as of yet.

His successor Louis van Gaal has also had ample time to overhaul the team, but has not yet done so, although that could soon change. Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw have been bought, but in order to get anywhere near the title again the likes of Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Michael Carrick need replacing with top quality players.

United's frailty has been exposed already this season with 10 players out injured and losing 2-1 in their first Premier League game at home to Swansea City.

Rather than pinning all the blame on the man who dismantled and rebuilt many title winning teams with United, perhaps Keys should look at the bigger picture.

Do you think that Sir Alex Ferguson is to blame for the state of United's squad?
