Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes that Manchester United will struggle to finish in the top four of the Premier League if they fail to sign more players in this transfer window.
The ex-England international was speaking to Sky Sports following the Red Devils’ 2-1 defeat to Swansea City at Old Trafford on Saturday.
‘There was a big hype that Louis van Gaal is coming and will change the system’, said the 36-year-old on Saturday Night Football. ‘David Moyes had problems with that squad last year and I think there was a feeling that Van Gaal would come with a magic wand.
‘They have got the same sort of players really. Herrera was the only sort of new addition, they had got a couple of young players playing, but that team and squad is not good enough.
‘I think they showed it last season... They need players desperately not to win the title - to get into the top four’.
Indeed, United need some top-class players if they want to compete for the Premier League title this campaign.
Just two players have been signed so far this summer: midfielder Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao and defender Luke Shaw from Southampton.
While 25-year-old Herrera is certainly going to enhance United’s midfield and Shaw will replace veteran Frenchman Patrice Evra at left-back when he recovers from his injuries, there are other problems that manager Louis van Gaal needs to sort out.
The departures of veterans Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic have left a big hole in United’s central defence, while the team’s problems in wide areas remain.
True, Van Gaal’s team on Saturday were affected by injuries to Jonny Evans, Shaw, Rafael da Silva, Michael Carrick, Danny Welbeck and Robin van Persie, but it is clear that this United squad will struggle once again to challenge for the Premier League title.
