Sturridge: Me and 'little brother' Sterling have a connection

Liverpool's new SAS made an instant impression in their 2-1 over Southampton o Sunday.

Liverpool's Daniel Sturridge has said that he feels he and the Reds' young winger Raheem Sterling have an excellent understanding on the field.

Both Englishmen found the net in Sunday's narrow 2-1 win over Southampton at Anfield. Sterling opened the scoring after being put through on goal by Jordan Henderson, finding the corner with a composed finish, while the winger was alert enough to nod the ball through to Sturridge for what turned out to be winner.

"It's important as a collective unit that we all provide the goals, but it doesn't matter how many we get so long as we defend well and get the goals we need," Sturridge told Sky Sports 1.

"I think with ourselves and the other boys, especially the ones the manager has brought in, with myself and Raheem we have a connection. We go out there and have a laugh and a joke on the training field, but we go on the pitch and give each other abuse at times but we like to get the best out of each other.

"I'm the older brother so I give him more stick than he gives me!"

The 19-year-old was awarded the man of the match for his performance, while former Chelsea star Sturridge will be delighted to have got on the scoresheet as he shoulders the goalscoring burden for a Liverpool side a little less focused in offensive areas without last season's top scorer Luis Suarez.

It was by no means an easy win against a side largely rebuilt by Ronald Koeman from last season. Liverpool have of course taken three of their top performers from 2013/14 in Dejan Lovren, Adam Lallana and Rickie lambert, but it was only the Croatian that started the game, with the Saints making a really good go of it against the Premier League runners up.

Will Sturridge and Sterling be the main men at Liverpool this year?
