Liverpool have certainly seen easier days.
A disciplined Southampton side almost left Anfield with a share of the spoils and it took a late Daniel Sturridge winner to see the visitors off.
In the end, a 2-1 victory was good enough for Brendan Rodgers' side and the relief was palpable after the game on Twitter.
Match-winner Sturridge spoke of the need for his side to 'dig deep' and was delighted that the Reds could claim all three points.
Teamwork always makes the dream work. Great 3 points. Dug in deep and got the result in the end. I'm a happy fella!! pic.twitter.com/f9Su1idn1K— Daniel Sturridge (@D_Sturridge) August 17, 2014
And shot stopper Simon Mignolet, who tipped a late Morgan Schneiderlin strike onto the bar, had a similar message, tweeting:
Elsewhere, Liverpool full-back Jose Enrique, who wasn't involved in the game, praised Javier Manquillo, who made his Premier League debut at right-back.
Good 3 points to start the season. Congratulations to my friend @javiermanquillo for his debut .— José enrique (@Jesanchez3) August 17, 2014
Finally, Raheem Sterling added:
Great team win today..happy to get season off with 3 points!! pic.twitter.com/JdYlo41sqt— Raheem Sterling (@sterling31) August 17, 2014
Plenty more Reds stars were no doubt just as relieved at winning a hard-earned three points - but it'll back to training soon, as Manchester City await a week on Monday.
Manuel Pellegrini's side beat Newcastle United 2-0 on Sunday afternoon and Rodgers' side will be raring to face the side that denied them the Premier League title last term.
The last time the two sides met, Philippe Coutinho scored a dramatic winner as Liverpool triumphed 3-2 at Anfield.
Can Liverpool beat Manchester City next time out?
