Simon Mignolet - 8/10
Much like his debut at Anfield last season, the Belgian made several terrific saves that proved to be vital come full-time. Hist most impressive stop came late on, when he tipped Morgan Schneiderlin's strike onto the bar.
Glen Johnson - 6/10
Far from comfortable at left-back and his performances suggest Alberto Moreno has a strong chance of winning a place in the Liverpool team straight away.
Dejan Lovren - 7/10
The Reds' new man impressed, offering his side plenty on the ball and sweeping things up well.
Martin Skrtel - 6.5/10
Looks as though he can form a solid partnership with Lovren. However, Nathaniel Clyne scored Southampton's goal and Skrtel was just off the pace when sliding in to try and stop him.
Javier Manquillo - 6.5/10
A decent first Premier League display, though far from the heights he reached in the friendly against Borussia Dortmund. That's the difference between competitive action and pre-season but the potential is there for Manquillo to shine.
Lucas Leiva - 4/10
Badly positioned for the goal and caught in possession far too often. Was given a chance today to show what he can offer Liverpool. In truth, he looks like he offers very little.
Steven Gerrard - 6.5/10
All the drive you would expect from the Reds skipper just no spectacular goals or assists on this occasion.
Jordan Henderson - 7/10
Will be remembered mainly for his assist for Raheem Sterling's opener - a sublime curling pass from long distance, hit with his weaker foot. The pass of the weekend so far by a long shot, although Dusan Tadic's back-heel for the Saints' goal provides competition.
Philippe Coutinho - 6.5/10
Was shut out by the Southampton defence and will need to produce more on days like this to truly fulfill his potential.
Raheem Sterling - 8.5/10
A goal and an assist was the order of the day for Liverpool's star, who many are dubbing a future Lionel Messi. Sterling will be an extremely important player at Anfield this term.
Daniel Sturridge - 7.5/10
At one point, the England striker had taken less touches than anyone including Mignolet - but still ended up scoring the winning goal for Brendan Rodgers' side, tapping home Sterling's header with the deftest of touches. As crucial as ever just by being in the right place at the right time.
Joe Allen - 6/10
Kept things ticking over for Liverpool after replacing Lucas. Was more effective than the Brazilian going forward.
Rickie Lambert - 6/10
Came on for Coutinho late in the game against his former side and provided an extra body for the Reds in the box.
