Leicester City set to move for experienced Marseille defender

New Premier League side Leicester City are set to sign right-back Rod Fanni from Marseille in the next few days.

French newspaper L’Equipe have revealed this weekend that they believe that Marseille right-back Rod Fanni is close to a move to Premier League new boys Leicester City. The 32-year-old defender has been labelled as surplus to requirements by new boss Marcelo Bielsa, and has been allowed to find a new club.

It is an interesting move from the East Midlands club, but the Frenchman would bring a level of experience to the Foxes defence, although he hasn’t played in the Premier League club.

Back in 2008, Fanni was regarded as one of the better right-backs in France and earned five caps while playing under Raymond Domenech. Even now, at 32 years old, he is still one of the fitter members of the Marseille team.

When called upon he can bomb up and down the right-flank with relative ease, and he is one of those rare breeds of full-backs that is as good a defender as he is going forward.

His experience is second to none. He played over 100 games for Stade Rennais before moving to Marseille in 2011, where he has played 88 games for the French giant.

The likes of Cesar Azpilicueta and Brice Dja Djédjé have joined Marseille while Fanni was there, but he has always managed to force his way into the team, even using his versatility as a centre-back to get back into the starting XI.

Watching Marseille struggle defensively this weekend, it is interesting that they are crying out for players that can play on the right or left of a defensive trio. Fanni would be ideal in this role as he can comfortably play all across the back-line.

At his age and his level of ability, Fanni is not going to become a star Premier League player for Leicester City, but he is very capable of becoming a leader in this side. He will help the clubs push to stay in the Premier League and will add to the French speaking contingent at the King Power Stadium.

Anthony Knockaert and Riyad Mahrez have adapted brilliantly to life in England, no doubt that they will help Fanni, but he will also help them take that next step to greatness.
