Cech: This is the Chelsea legend I would bring back to Stamford Bridge

Petr Cech

Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech says Gianfranco Zola would be the legend he would choose to bring back to Stamford Bridge.

Petr Cech may have never played with Gianfranco Zola, but he is still the Chelsea legend who he would pick to bring back to the current side.

The diminutive Italian is regarded as one of the finest players to ever pull on the Chelsea shirt and Cech has clearly been impressed from watching highlights of Zola.

When doing an impromptu Twitter question and answer session, the Czech Republic international stopper revealed that Zola would be the one player he would bring back to Chelsea if offered the chance to sign any of their former legends.

Zola, who has managed Watford and West Ham United since retiring from professional football in 2005, scored 59 times in 229 appearances during a glistening career at Stamford Bridge.

His creativity and skill in possession dazzled their supporters in a time where they were not quite the powerhouses of English football that they have now become.

If he was to join up with the current side he would have a big task to displace Diego Costa in the lone striking role up-front, as the Brazilian is a more natural goalscorer than Zola was.

For all his brilliance, the Italian was better in a deep-lying role than leading the line and never managed to score 27 goals in a season, like Costa did last year.

If he was to play as a number 10, he would also have some severe competition such is the strength of Chelsea’s squad nowadays.

The likes of Oscar, Cesc Fabregas and Marco Van Ginkel can all occupy the attacking midfield role for Jose Mourinho’s side, meaning they have a lot of quality in this area.

Clearly, though, Cech feels that Zola would have been able to offer a lot to this modern day side and that is testament to how high a regard he is held at Stamford Bridge by players and supporters alike.

Would Zola start for modern day Chelsea?
