Fjortoft backs 'desperate' United to move for Benatia

Old Trafford

Jan Aage Fjortoft has said he'd be surprised if Manchester United don't try and sign Mehdi Benatia from Roma.

Bundesliga football expert Jan Aage Fjortoft has revealed his belief that Manchester United will try and sign Mehdi Benatia from AS Roma.

Bayern Munich are reportedly the favourites to poach the 27-year-old for their Bundesliga title defence, but Fjortoft has suggested that United’s apparent desperation for a defender could force them to make a big money bid.

United have already seen two of their main central defensive targets slip from their transfer radar.

Mats Hummels has been named Borussia Dortmund captain while Thomas Vermaelen heads off to Spain to link up with Barcelona.

United have two weeks left to do any transfer business and following their defensive display against Swansea over the weekend in a 2-1 defeat, Louis van Gaal may well have decided that a new defender should be his priority over the next fortnight.

Chelsea are reportedly out of the running to sign Benatia and if Bayern put together a formal offer, it could be difficult for United to react considering the greater current chances of success and Champions League football that the German champions can offer.

Would Benatia be a good signing for United?
