Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata has revealed his thoughts on the defeat to Swansea City.

Juan Mata has described Manchester United’s opening day Premier League defeat to Swansea City as ‘a big disappointment’.

In his weekly blog, Mata detailed how he was looking forward to writing his first entry of the season, with the disappointment of the defeat wiping out any positivity he had leading into the game.

“I confess that I was looking forward to writing this first entry of the season. It’s been a couple of years since I started my blog, soon after my arrival in the UK,” wrote Mata.

“It was a big disappointment, that’s the truth. We were hoping to make a good Premiership debut in Old Trafford.”

United fans would have headed to Old Trafford over the weekend hoping to watch some vibrant and exciting football.

However, what they saw was more of the defensive disorganisation and midfield chaos which surrounded the team last time round under the guidance of David Moyes.

Mata has suggested that to correct the problem, United need to find some consistency and quickly learn from their mistakes to stop them from happening all over again.

“It is also true that this is just the beginning. We need to set a regular pace and learn from our mistakes.”

“The champion last season was the team that, of the top four, was leading the table less days in the last two weeks.”

Fortunately for United and for Louis van Gaal, there is still time to strengthen in the transfer window before it shuts until the winter on September 1.

United will also benefit from playing only once per week for most of the season, which will allow van Gaal to work on the weaknesses he experiences in the squad as the league games start to come thick and fast.

Mata will be disappointed with his own performance against Swansea and he should be looking to put things right quickly.

Fortunately, it was just the first game of the season and not a cup final or a title defining clash against a rival.

Where do United need to improve for their next game?
