Liverpool may not be many football followers’ favourites to clinch the Premier League title this season, but they made a winning start to the 2014-15 campaign.
The Reds got the better of Southampton 2-1 at Anfield on Sunday, thanks to goals from Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge.
England international winger Sterling put Liverpool in the lead midway through the first half after latching onto Jordan Henderson’s brilliant pass.
Nathaniel Clyne restored parity for Southampton 11 minutes into the second half, and although the Saints continued to play well, it was the Merseyside outfit who had the last laugh at Anfield, striker Sturridge scoring the winning goal 11 minutes from time after being assisted by Sterling.
It was not exactly the most convincing of wins for Liverpool, who were put under pressure by a Ronald Koeman-led Southampton side that have seen an unprecedented player exodus this summer.
However, Liverpool showed on Sunday that they can cope without star striker Luis Suarez, who left for Barcelona for a reported transfer fee of £75 million last month.
Among the many Liverpool followers who revelled in the team’s win on Sunday was Linda Pizzuti Henry, wife of the club’s owner John W. Henry, who took to social networking site Twitter to express her delight.
Opening Day with a win at Anfield! Three points for a solid start to the season. We go again...— Linda Pizzuti Henry (@Linda_Pizzuti) August 17, 2014
The season has only just started and it would not be very wise to read too much into their win or their performance, but still it cannot be denied that on Sunday Liverpool showed that there is life after Suarez after all.
