Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers: Luis Suarez sent us text message before Southampton game

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has revealed that Luis Suarez sent the team a text message ahead of their clash against Southampton on Sunday.

Luis Suarez may have left Liverpool for Barcelona, but he still holds the Premier League club close to his heart.

Ahead of the Reds’ opening game of the season against Southampton at Anfield on Sunday, the 27-year-old striker sent a text message to the club.

‘He sent us a lovely text this morning wishing us all the best and that [he hopes] we start strong’, manager Brendan Rodgers told reporters after the match on Sunday. ‘It was a great gesture. He's a friend of Liverpool now’.

Liverpool are one of the most historic and iconic football clubs in the world, and have endeared themselves to many players who have featured for them.

Suarez seems to be one of them, and it is not hard to understand why. After all, it was the Merseyside outfit that propelled him to worldwide fame.

Although the Uruguay international made a name for himself on the world stage during the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa, it was his arrival at Liverpool from Ajax in January 2011 for a reported transfer fee of £22.7 million that saw him gain a big regular audience.

Suarez was signed to replace Fernando Torres and he did not disappoint, progressing with each passing season and then taking his game to a whole new level in 2013-14.

Suarez has been described by Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard as the best player he has played with, and the Uruguayan striker would (probably) have continued at Anfield had he not been involved in the well-documented unsavoury incident in Brazil.

Liverpool did not seem to miss the former Nacional star much on Sunday, though, as they kicked off their 2014-15 Premier League campaign with a 2-1 home victory over Southampton.

Will Liverpool miss Luis Suarez this season?
