On this day: Arsenal fans furious with Gazidis, Abramovich's message to supporters

Arsenal Fans At Emirates

Stories about Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United from this day last year all feature.

There are several Premier League talking points to mull over today.

Manchester United are getting slammed for their defensive performance against Swansea, Arsenal are getting ready for an important Champions League game while Chelsea fans are buzzing with excitement ahead of the game against Burnley.

There is also still plenty going on with the transfer market not due to close for another two weeks and sides working hard to further improve areas of their squads before the window shuts until winter.

We’ve decided to look back on this day last year to see which stories were making the headlines.

‘Arsenal fans send letter to Gazidis’

A section of Arsenal supporters wrote an angry letter to Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis after the Gunners lost 3-1 to Aston Villa on the opening day of the season.

Gunners were seemingly frustrated with the club’s lack of willingness to spend big on new recruits and improve the side in similar fashion to their Premier League rivals.

The letter suggested that the growing anger in the stands from sections of supporters was starting to turn ‘poisonous’.

‘Abramovich’s message to Chelsea fans’

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich thanked supporters for their support during his ten years at the club.

The Russian marked a decade at the head of the club this time last summer and he wrote a message for blues fans in the programme for the match against Hull City.

“We have had a great decade together and the club could not have achieved it all without you. Thanks for your support, here's to many more years of success,” said Abramovich.

‘Ferdinand bites back at Mourinho’

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand bit back at claims from Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho that the Old Trafford side were not ‘terrific champions’.

United strolled to an opening day win in the Premier League, beating Swansea City 4-1 away from home.

“That was his first soundbite of the season, wasn’t it? I think we expected it. A lot of teams vying for the championship are going to be struggling for points at Swansea, so it was a good result,” said the experienced defender.
